PRE-SHOW NOTE TO AUDIENCE

[Teacher / Narrator addresses audience before play begins]

NARRATOR: Good morning everyone! Today, our chemistry department brings you a special treat — a journey into THE MAGIC LAB! But before we begin, I have one important instruction for you. Whenever Dr. Chem says the magic word — REACT — all of you must shout it back as loud as you can. Let's practice... REACT!

๐ŸŽค AUDIENCE: REACT! ⚗️

NARRATOR: Excellent! The magic lab is now officially open. Lights please!

ACT 1 — The Mysterious Lab (3–4 minutes)

[Stage is dimly lit. A table with equipment is at the center. Spooky/mysterious music plays softly. RIYA walks in, looking around curiously.]

RIYA: *(talking to herself)* Everyone else went home but I just had to peek inside the chemistry lab. They say strange things happen here after school hours...

[She picks up a beaker and examines it. Suddenly, a dramatic sound effect plays. DR. CHEM enters with a flourish — lab coat flowing, arms wide open.]

DR. CHEM: *(dramatically)* Who dares to enter... THE MAGIC LAB?!

RIYA: *(startled, nearly drops the beaker)* AHHH! Who— who are you?!

DR. CHEM: I... am the Spirit of Chemistry! I have existed since the first atom was born, since the first star exploded, since the first raindrop fell! And you — young Riya — have wandered into my domain.

RIYA: Spirit of Chemistry? That sounds... made up. Chemistry is just memorising formulas and balancing equations. My teacher makes us do it every day. It's SO boring.

DR. CHEM: *(gasps dramatically)* BORING?! *(turns to audience)* Did she just say chemistry is BORING?

๐ŸŽค AUDIENCE: YES SHE DID! ๐Ÿ˜„

DR. CHEM: *(to Riya)* Oh, my dear child. You have no idea what chemistry truly is. It is not just formulas on a blackboard. It is the colour of a sunset. The fizz in your cold drink. The fire that cooks your food. Chemistry... is the language of the universe. And tonight — I will prove it. Are you ready to see real magic?

RIYA: *(hesitant, then curious)* I... okay. Fine. But it better not be boring.

DR. CHEM: *(smiling)* It will be anything but. *(to audience)* And you — my wonderful audience — are you ready?

๐ŸŽค AUDIENCE: YES! / REACT! ⚗️

ACT 2 — The Colour Magic (4–5 minutes)

[CARBON, HYDROGEN, and OXYGEN skip onto the stage, waving cheerfully at the audience.]

CARBON: *(bowing)* Hello! I'm Carbon! The building block of all life! Every living thing you see — plants, animals, YOU — has carbon in it!

HYDROGEN: *(jumping excitedly)* And I'm Hydrogen! The lightest element in the whole universe! I'm in water, I'm in your body, I'm EVERYWHERE!

OXYGEN: *(proudly, crosses arms)* And I... am Oxygen. The most important one. Without me, nothing burns. Nothing breathes. Nothing lives. You're welcome.

CARBON: *(rolling eyes)* Oxygen always does this...

RIYA: *(laughing)* Wait — elements have personalities?

DR. CHEM: Everything in chemistry has a story, Riya. Now — let us begin with colour. *(picks up a glass of red cabbage juice)* This, my dear audience, is not just purple juice. This is a natural pH indicator — made from red cabbage!

RIYA: pH? We learned about that! Acids and bases!

DR. CHEM: Correct! Watch what happens when I add this to an acid... *(adds vinegar to a glass of cabbage juice — it turns PINK)*

[Audience reacts with 'Ooooh!']

DR. CHEM: Pink! An acid! And now — a base... *(adds baking soda solution — it turns GREEN/BLUE)*

[More audience gasps!]

HYDROGEN: *(to audience)* And in neutral water — it stays purple! Like a rainbow, but made of chemistry!

RIYA: That's... actually really cool. So the colour is telling us something about the chemical?

DR. CHEM: Exactly. Chemistry speaks — you just have to know how to listen. The lemon in your kitchen is acidic. The baking soda in your bread is basic. And the water you drink is neutral. You are surrounded by chemistry, Riya — every single day.

RIYA: *(to audience)* Did you know that? Did you know there's chemistry in your kitchen?

๐ŸŽค AUDIENCE: YES / NO! ๐Ÿ‹

ACT 3 — The Invisible Extinguisher (3–4 minutes)

[OXYGEN walks forward importantly. HYDROGEN and CARBON step aside, rolling their eyes with amusement.]

OXYGEN: Allow me to take the stage now. Everyone thinks fire is so powerful. But I control fire. Without me, no fire can exist!

RIYA: *(to Dr. Chem)* Is that true?

DR. CHEM: Completely. Fire needs three things — fuel, heat, and... *(gestures to audience)*

๐ŸŽค AUDIENCE: OXYGEN! ๐Ÿ”ฅ

DR. CHEM: Brilliant! So what happens when we remove oxygen from a fire? Watch carefully. *(carefully mixes baking soda and vinegar in a jar — bubbles form)* This reaction produces carbon dioxide — CO₂ gas. Invisible. Silent. And very, very useful. *(slowly tilts the jar near the candle flame — the flame goes out)*

[Audience gasps and claps!]

RIYA: The candle went out! But you didn't blow it or touch it!

CARBON: *(proudly)* That was ME! CO₂ — Carbon + two Oxygens! We suffocated the flame by pushing out the oxygen!

OXYGEN: *(grumbling)* I was just... taking a break.

[Audience laughs.]

DR. CHEM: This, Riya, is exactly how carbon dioxide fire extinguishers work! Real chemistry — saving lives every single day. No magic wand. Just science.

RIYA: *(thoughtfully)* So... chemistry isn't just in the lab. It's in our safety too?

DR. CHEM: Chemistry is in everything, my child. *(smiling)* But our grand finale is yet to come...

ACT 4 — The Elephant Who Sneezed! (4–5 minutes)

[DR. CHEM brings forward a large cylinder on a tray. The ELEMENTS gather around excitedly. DR. CHEM pours in hydrogen peroxide, dish soap, and food colour. HYDROGEN holds up a small bottle of yeast mixture.]

DR. CHEM: *(to audience)* Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls — for our grand finale, I give you... ELEPHANT TOOTHPASTE!

RIYA: Elephant toothpaste? What does that even mean?

HYDROGEN: *(grinning)* You'll see. Ready everyone? On three, say REACT!

RIYA: *(to audience)* Altogether everyone — one, two, three...

๐ŸŽค AUDIENCE: REACT! ⚗️

[HYDROGEN pours the yeast solution into the cylinder. A massive foam erupts dramatically upward! The ELEMENTS jump back in delight. Audience goes wild with cheering and applause!]

RIYA: *(screaming with delight)* WHOA! That is INCREDIBLE! What just happened?!

DR. CHEM: *(laughing)* The hydrogen peroxide broke down very quickly — releasing oxygen gas at a rapid rate! The soap trapped the gas into millions of tiny bubbles — and WHOOSH! An explosion of foam!

OXYGEN: *(standing proudly in the foam)* That was all me. I told you I was important.

[Everyone laughs.]

CARBON: It is called a decomposition reaction — one substance breaking into simpler ones. H₂O₂ becoming water and oxygen!

HYDROGEN: And the foam is warm to touch because energy is released — it's an exothermic reaction!

RIYA: *(looking at audience, amazed)* And this is... real chemistry? No tricks?

DR. CHEM: No tricks. No magic wands. Just science. And science, my dear Riya — is always more extraordinary than magic. Because magic is fiction. But chemistry... chemistry is REAL.

CLOSING — The Chemistry Oath (1–2 minutes)

[All characters line up. DR. CHEM steps forward to address the entire assembly.]

DR. CHEM: *(to the audience warmly)* My wonderful young scientists — chemistry is not something to fear. It is not something to memorise and forget. It is the world around you. The food you eat, the air you breathe, the colours you see, the medicines that heal you — all chemistry. You do not need to be a scientist to appreciate it. You just need to be curious. So today, we ask you to take a small oath with us — raise your right hand!

[ALL CHARACTERS raise their hands. Audience raises hands too.]

DR. CHEM: Repeat after me — *(pause after each line for audience to repeat)*

๐ŸŽค AUDIENCE: I will never fear chemistry...

๐ŸŽค AUDIENCE: I will ask questions and explore...

๐ŸŽค AUDIENCE: I will respect chemicals and stay safe...

๐ŸŽค AUDIENCE: Because the world is one big, beautiful lab!

DR. CHEM: *(smiling broadly)* Wonderful! You are all honorary members of THE MAGIC LAB! Remember — stay curious, stay safe, and never stop discovering!

ALL CHARACTERS TOGETHER: *(bowing together)* REACT! ⚗️

[Upbeat music plays. Characters bow as audience applauds. CURTAIN.]

TEACHER NOTES & SAFETY GUIDELINES

pH Colour Demo Safety:

Use only food-grade vinegar and baking soda. Red cabbage juice can be boiled and stored in advance. Use plastic cups instead of glass for younger audiences. Wear gloves when handling.

CO₂ Candle Demo Safety:

Keep candle secured in a holder on a stable table. Have a fire extinguisher nearby as a precaution. Do not lean over the candle. Use a long-handled jar to tilt CO₂ from a distance.

Elephant Toothpaste Safety:

Use 6% H₂O₂ only (NOT 30% — it causes burns). Perform on a plastic tray to catch foam. Wear gloves and goggles. Foam will be warm — do not let students touch immediately. Dispose in sink with plenty of water.

General Tips:

Rehearse demos at least twice before the assembly. Have a student helper hold the tray. Use microphones so dialogue reaches the whole hall. Costumes for element characters can be simple white t-shirts with large letters pinned or ironed on.
